Flumendosa Basin (Italy)

Flumendosa Basin (Italy)

The River Flumendosa (127 km) basin lies in the Southwest quadrant of Sardinia and flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea near the small town of Muravera. The natural variation in discharge during the year in the river Flumendosa is reduced by dams along the main course and its principal tributaries, Flumineddu and Mulargia. In general, the river Flumendosa basin is relatively pristine, because of low population density and lack of agriculture practices.

Two large reservoirs, the Mulargia  (reservoir capacity of 320 millions of m3) and the Flumendosa (reservoir capacity of 300 millions of m3), linked by a tunnel,  collect runoff from a basin area of 934 km2. The system supplies most of the water for civil, industrial and irrigation purposes to the southern part of Sardinia. Daily precipitation and temperature data from 31 weather stations in and surrounding the Flumendosa basin and monthly runoff data at the basin outlet were collected since 1923. A hydrometric station for discharge measurements at the Mulargia section (area of about 65 km2) of the basin has been installed in October 2020.
